MEDIA ALERT

Retro Revival Celebrates Four Decades of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation.
Roy Solomon and Green Jeans Farmery Host a Gathering and Fundraiser,
Forty Years in the Making

On April 29, 2017

Who: Roy Solomon and Green Jeans Farmery

What: A 40-Year Retro Reunion of the businesses Solomon has built over the past forty years; bringing together the professionals who ran the businesses, and the people who loved the businesses — all for a fundraiser to support Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico.

Why: Celebrate, build awareness and fundraise. Forty years of building and running businesses has taught Roy Solomon many things. Chief amongst these are the joy of community and the terrible toll that cancer can exact on these communities. It’s time to celebrate accomplishments of Solomon’s forty-year run by throwing a fun party, raising money for a cancer charity (Children’s Cancer Fund of NM), and bringing old communities together again.

When: April 29, 2017, from 2pm to 6pm.

Where: Green Jeans Farmery, on the northeast corner of Carlisle and I-40. 3600 Cutler Ave NE, Albuquerque NM 87110

Albuquerque, N.M.  Innovation and charity often stem from the same place of commitment. This has been the case for Roy Solomon who has been responsible for some of our city’s — and region’s — most cherished eateries, hot spots and communities. In developing these communities Solomon has become increasingly aware of the impact cancer has on family, friends and associates. So on April 29, 2017 at his most recent adventure, Green Jeans Farmery at 3600 Cutler NE., Solomon and his past business associates will reunite and auction off some of their most iconic memorabilia, with all proceeds benefitting Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico. And you are invited.

It is called the 40 Year Retro Revival, and will feature nostalgic food and memorabilia from local restaurants: Friars' Pub, Court Club of Durango, Hungry Bear, Sunset Grille, 505 Southwestern and Bailey's on the Beach. The event will honor Ralph Kaplan aka “Buck_Charris,” the Hungry Bear Gong Show’s “own” Chuck Barris-style host, who succumbed to cancer in 2009. In his memory, all funds raised at the event will be donated to the Children’s Cancer Fund of NM.

Solomon and his associates will be selling items from all of the old bars and restaurants, and holding a silent auction for rare items (including branded baseball caps, balloon pins and balloon fiesta jackets, and other one-of-a-kind souvenirs). A chef will be recreating popular menu items of the past, and providing samples.

The Retro Revival will feature live music performed by some of the musicians who have performed at the Retro Revival establishments, as well as video screenings of the Gong Show from the Hungry Bear (1981-1984).

“People inspire me and, I hope, my businesses have inspired them and provided them with memories in return. I recently had a gentleman track me down to ask me for a copy of my menu for Sunset Grille, which I closed in 1989. It included a Chinese shrimp dish, which many years ago, he had ordered for his girlfriend during a dinner date. He hid an engagement ring in the accompanying fortune cookie, the girlfriend found the ring, said yes, and the rest is history. He called me, wanting to buy a copy of the menu as a gift for the woman who has been his wife since that fateful date night dinner. That got me thinking that an event like this, a Retro Reunion, might be really resonant, and a LOT of fun. Reunite with my old friends, and help raise money for a good cause."

Businesses invited to the Retro Reunion event include:

  • Friars’ Pub, Friars East, Friars North, 1976 - 1980

  • Court Club of Durango,  1980-1984

  • Hungry Bear, 1981-1984

  • Sunset Grille, 1986-1989

  • 505 Southwestern, 1990-1997

  • Bailey's on the Beach, 2010-2013

Save the date! Green Jeans Farmery’s patios will be open for eating and drinking, the indoor family play space is open, and there will be special offers from Green Jeans Farmery vendors.
